Slope away from the house

Every patio we pour falls away from your slab, so rain leaves the back door and heads for the yard, a swale or a drain.

Concrete Pool Decks

What it is. And when it's the right call.

A pool deck takes more abuse than any other concrete around the house: bare feet, splashing water, pool chemicals and full summer sun. It needs grip when it is wet, it needs to shed water away from the pool, and it should stay comfortable enough to walk on in July.

We pour new pool decks, extend undersized ones, and replace cracked decks around existing pools. The deck is pitched so water runs away from the pool edge to the yard or to a drain, not back into the pool.

A new or rebuilt deck makes sense when

  • You are building a new pool and need the deck around it
  • The existing deck is cracked, lifted or has trip edges
  • Water runs back into the pool or pools on the deck
  • There is no room for loungers, a table or shade

Step by step

How we build a pool deck. Grip, drainage and a clean edge.

Every step below happens on every job. The base and the slope are never the place to save money.

  1. 1

    Plan the drainage

We set the slope so water moves away from the coping, and add deck drains where the yard does not allow a simple slope.

  2. 2

    Build the base

Compacted crushed rock over prepared soil, with separator fabric on clay.

  3. 3

    Reinforce and joint

Reinforcement throughout, an expansion joint at the coping, and control joints laid out around the pool shape.

  4. 4

    Finish for bare feet

Brushed, stamped or exposed aggregate, with an anti-slip sealer where it is needed.

Local conditions

Pool decks in Central Texas summers

From June through September, a dark deck can be too hot to cross barefoot. We steer most Kyle-area pool owners toward lighter colors and textured finishes for that reason.

Clay soil around pools gets wet from splash-out and dry in drought, which is hard on a deck with a thin base. The same base and fabric we use under patios keeps a pool deck stable.

Can you replace a deck around an existing pool?

Yes. We protect the pool and coping, remove the old deck, and pour a new one with proper slope and an expansion joint at the coping.

Will the deck be slippery when wet?

Brushed and exposed aggregate finishes have good grip. On stamped decks we add an anti-slip additive to the sealer.
