Slope away from the house

Every patio we pour falls away from your slab, so rain leaves the back door and heads for the yard, a swale or a drain.

Stamped Concrete

What it is. And when it's the right call.

Stamped concrete gives you the look of flagstone, brick or wood planks at the cost and durability of a poured slab. It is the most requested upgrade on patios and pool decks in Kyle, Buda and San Marcos.

The pattern is only as good as the slab under it. A stamped patio gets the same base, slope and reinforcement as any patio we build, with fiber in the mix and joints placed so they hide in the pattern.

Stamped or stained concrete fits when

  • You want a patio that looks like stone without the cost of stone
  • You are rebuilding a plain builder patio and want it to feel finished
  • You want the patio, walkway and pool deck to match
  • Your HOA prefers a natural stone look

Step by step

How stamped concrete is made. Color, pattern and timing.

Every step below happens on every job. The base and the slope are never the place to save money.

  1. 1

    Build the slab right

Same base, slope, reinforcement and expansion joint as any patio we pour. Fiber goes into the mix.

  2. 2

    Add the base color

Color is mixed into the concrete or broadcast onto the surface while it is fresh.

  3. 3

    Release and stamp

A release agent adds a second, darker tone. Then the crew presses the pattern mats in while the concrete is at the right stage.

  4. 4

    Cut joints in the pattern

Control joints are placed along grout lines so they disappear into the design.

  5. 5

    Wash and seal

After curing, the surface is cleaned and sealed to deepen the color and protect it.

Pricing

What affects the price of stamped concrete

Stamped concrete costs more than broom finish because of the color, pattern work and sealing. You get a range in writing after the assessment.

  • Size of the area
  • Pattern choice and whether there is a border
  • Number of colors
  • Base and site prep
  • Sealer
  • Tear-out of an existing slab, if any

Local conditions

Stamped concrete in the Texas heat

Stamping is a race against the clock, and a 100-degree afternoon makes that race shorter. We pour stamped work early in the day and size the crew to the job so the pattern goes in at the right time.

Dark colors get hot under bare feet in July. For pool decks and uncovered patios we usually recommend lighter tones, and a sealer that keeps the surface from getting slick.

Is stamped concrete slippery?

Sealed concrete can be slicker than broom finish. We can add an anti-slip additive to the sealer, which we recommend around pools and on steps.

Does stamped concrete need resealing?

Yes. Resealing every few years keeps the color rich and protects the surface. We will tell you what to expect for your finish.

Stamped concrete or pavers?

Both can look great. Stamped concrete is one continuous slab with fewer joints to weed. Pavers can be lifted and reset if the ground moves. We can talk through both at the assessment.
